Water Heaters are an integral part and function of our everyday lives. This fact makes it that much more inconvenient when they are not functioning to their fullest potential or when they up and stop working all together. Most water heater manufacturers, both traditional tanks and tankless units, recommend having your water heater serviced annually to help extend the life of the unit and help it maintain efficiency to the fullest ability.
A water heater service of a traditonal style tank should include complete flushing of the tank, check of the anode rod, pressure relief valve, temperature, and ventilation, if applicable. This routine maintenance will help prevent sediment build up in your tank and allow the unit to heat more efficiently and extend the life of your water heater. With regular proper maintenance, you should expect your water heater to last 10 years or more.
If you do not perform regular maintenance on your water heater, you run the risk of sediment building up which has multiple cascading effects on your household. Sediment can build up in the bottom which leaves a layer of buildup that the heating element must work that much harder to heat through. This can cause your energy usage to increase drastically, resulting in higher utility bills. Sediment build up will also take up physical space in the tank and therefore reduce the capacity of available hot water in the unit. And finally, the sediment buildup also has the potential to clog the pressure relief valve and could result in water heater rupture with major water damage resulting.
This small maintenance fee can extend the life of your water heater, improve efficiency, and lower repair costs. Everyone changes the oil in their vehicles to maintain proper function and safety, why not include your home’s water heater too?
